AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) No Rainfall

Follow

If your AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) display unit or My AcuRite® account is not reporting rainfall from your AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) Weather Station, open the sensor to inspect the tipping cups that measure rainfall within the sensor for debris. These steps can also be used as routine maintenance to clean the interior of the sensor.

If no rainfall is being recorded:

  1. Be sure the plastic tab underneath the rain collector (put in place for shipping purposes) on the bottom of the AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) sensor has been removed. (#3 in the image below.)
  2. Make sure the AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) sensor's internal tipping lever is able to move freely by dripping a small amount of water through the rain collector. You should be able to hear the lever tipping.

If you have previously cleaned out the sensor, please ensure the following:

  1. If you removed the tipping assembly, ensure that it has been re-installed correctly.
  2. On each side of the assembly, there is a plug.  One plug is silver and one plug is brass.  The silver plug is a magnet and must be under the long plastic sleeve for it to register rain.  Inside the sleeve is the reed switch, when the magnet passes back and forth, it opens/closes the reed switch and that is how the rain is measured.
  3. To test the rain gauge, slowly rock the tipping lever back and forth with your finger about 5 times. Wait 1 minute and the display should read approximately .05”.

If you have not previously cleaned out the sensor, please complete the following procedure:

Items Needed:

AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) sensor, Philips screwdriver, damp cloth, car wax, toothbrush (optional), mothball (optional)

  1. First, open your AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) sensor by removing the (4) four screws from the bottom. The screws toward the center of the sensor are for Rain Gauge calibration only. Do not adjust these screws.
  2. After your sensor has been opened, remove any insects, cobwebs, or debris. An old toothbrush can help to clean out the hard-to-reach places.
  3. Use a damp cloth to clean off the rain gauge tipping buckets. Note: The damp cloth should only be used to clean the tipping buckets. Do not use to clean any other internal components.
  4. Place a small amount of car wax on a soft cloth and wipe down the tipping bucks to ensure that rain flows through smoothly.
  5. To further defend against insects crawling into your sensor, you may place a mothball in the nook, near the tipping buckets (shown in the video). Adhere the mothball to the sensor with a piece of tape. Note: Insect repellent may be used for additional protection, but should not be sprayed on the internal components or into the sensor.
  6. To test the rain gauge, slowly rock the tipping lever back and forth with your finger about 5 times. Wait 1 minute and the display should read approximately .05”.
  7. Reassemble the AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) sensor by replacing the (4) four screws on the bottom of the sensor that was removed earlier.
  8. Clear out any false readings that were taken while you were cleaning your sensor by pressing the CLEAR TODAY button on your AcuRite Iris® (5-in-1) compatible display.
