My Acurite 01098 cdi has a a compartment next to the batteries in the display for a CR2032 battery. What is it for? Do you have a picture of the compartment?

That's the battery for the "Intelli-Time" feature, basically a clock pre-set at the factory.

Apparently information on replacing it did not make it into the 01098cdi manual, but here's a clip from the 01098 manual that should be applicable.  (I've no idea what the "cdi" suffix means)

Does the battery work just by making contact with the metal strip on the compartment floor.  The underside of the cover is just plastic with a raised circle in the middle but no metal contact at all.  Is that correct?  Is there an indicator that it is working? What does a preset clock from the factory tell me and where is the info?

There are different types of button battery holders.  I can't tell from the picture what yours might have.

There should be two contact points, though... the bottom and either the top or side.

Here's what your manual says about Intelli-Time:

A pdf of the complete 01098cdi manual is here: https://www.acurite.com/media/manuals/01098CDI-instructions.pdf

If the "Intelli-Time" isn't working, I suspect you'd have to set the entire clock from scratch if the AA batteries have been removed too long.
