SmartHUB disconnected after working properly for months

My SmartHUB has been working fine for months but dropped off yesterday afternoon with no explanation.  I've tried power cycling it, moving it to a different location, replaced network cables, connecting it direct to router (was working fine through my main switch).  Left it powered off overnight and tried again.  No change

The hub doesn't seem to be contacting my DHCP server for an address anymore, I did have a reservation set up for it so I knew it was the same address everytime.  Today I can see it on IP address 10.0.0.50 which is accessible on my network but definitely didn't come from a DHCP server.

I have had issue once before which just resolved itself in time, I think there were problems with Acurite's web servers in that instance.   Since the DHCP doesn't seem to be working this time, it seems it's a different issue.

Lights:  right blue=solid.    Network: green=solid, yellow=flashing.

Any ideas anyone?

Best regards

Okay, I've resolved the initial problem after discovering that it was the DHCP service on my Windows Server that had indeed stopped handing out addresses.

The hub is connecting and my data is being uploaded to myAcurite again.  However, I can't seem to get my Weather Underground credentials to get pushed out from myAcurite to my SmartHUB.

I've tried deleting and re-entering them several times and restarting the hub accordingly but my Wunderground credentials just do not appear on the hub splash page.

I am somewhat confused about whether to enter my 'station key' or account password into the 'Weather Underground Password' field under my sharing settings.   I've tried both with no difference either way.

Has anyone else struck this?

Hello Frewster,

Please remove your station ID and password and type them back in. If that doesn't work try the station ID and passkey. We have had where it works for both. If that doesn't correct the issue then please let us know.

Hi Jennifer,

I've tried both, several times with no change.  The details just don't seem to be making it down my myAcurite to the SmartHUB.  I've tried the ReStart button and 'reactivating' the hub after the changes as well.

Hello Fewster,
I was able to get you back up and running on Weather Underground by changing the address associated with the account, letting Weather Underground update, then changing it back.  Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you.

Hmm, curious. That's not something I would have ever thought to do.

As you say, it's working at the moment so I'll keep an eye on it.
Thanks

Hello Josiah,

I can see you are currently updating on Weather Underground.  When you lose connection, do you lose connection on My AcuRite?  What do you have to do to get back online? Thank you.

Early this morning on 12/6/17 at 1:06 AM my station stopped reporting to MyAcurite and WU. I didn't think much of it since this happens quite often late at night and early in the morning. I moved my smartHUB a bit and the MYAcruite reporting came back but not WU. When I checked this morning at 10:30 AM it still wasn't reporting to WU but MYAcurite was fine. So I changed my address and bam, it starting reporting again. Any reason why this happens? I have had my station for over 5 years and never had to change my address to get it to work. (There is more detailed information below for Acurite, if they want to investigate, or those with similar problems.)

Many nights starting around 11 PM,  my station's reporting on MyAcurite and WU gets sketchy. It will skip many updates sometimes for a couple of hours. Then about 4 or 5 AM it will report every 5 or 6 minutes like normal. I have checked to see if something could be interfering around that time but if anything we have less wireless devices on at night. And the smartHUB is not near anything that gets turned on at that time of the night.

I did raise the height of my smart HUB in Dec. and on the 1st and 4th it worked great all through the night. But why overnight on the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th did it have the sporadic update issue? At 1:06 AM this morning the smartHUB stopped reporting so I raised it up even more. My signal strength went from 1 to 2. MyAcurite started reporting again but WU did not get any updates until I changed the address at 1030 AM. Any ideas what is happening so I can avoid the issue in the future?

Hello Drew,

The reason it starts reporting when you change the address is because by changing the address it pushes the readings to update. We are aware that this works to get Wunderground working. It is part of the troubleshooting that we use when customers are not able to get their Wunderground to transmit online. When you say that 1:06 am the HUB stopped working are you referring to on My AcuRite or Wunderground? Which HUB is this that you are referring to?

Sorry Jen to take so long to reply. That morning the 09150TRX HUB stopped reporting to MyAcurite and WU at 1:06 AM. That was happening often at night but usually 1 to 3 hours max and it would start reporting again. I reset it by pushing the button for a coupe of seconds and tried unplugging it for a minute. Neither of those helped. I messed with it till about 3 AM and then went to bed. At 10:30 AM there were still no readings so I changed my address then changed it back and all started working again right away. Never in the 5+ years i have owned that station did I have to change the address to get it to work again until then.

What is weird is I went to bed at 3 AM and 1:06 AM was the last update on both MyAcurite and WU until I changed the address at 10:30 AM. But if I now look at the chart on MyAcurite for 12/6/17, it shows update points between the 1:06 AM and 10:30 AM. I was watching it real time till 3 AM and those data points were not there. Does MyAcurite fill them in at some point or am I going crazy? WU still shows no updates between 1:06 AM and 10:30 AM.

As of late I have slightly changed the orientation of the HUB and it has worked great for 3 days in a row now. Sometimes it will work great for days in one orientation then it stops and I have to change it. You would think if it worked right for 3 days or so it would keep working in the same orientation. This HUB shows 1 sometimes 2 bars and it's only about 50 feet away, though it has to go through multiple walls. and the roof. I think when the 5 in 1 signal is weak those are the stations with reporting problems.

I like the idea of the battery backup HUBs you all just emailed me about. Will these have stronger signals?

Drew,

My experience is that the new device exhibits less orientation sensitivity than the old hub. It is quite omni directional because a vertically polarized coil antenna has replaced the horizontal/vertical bent wire antenna in the hub and its non-uniform receive pattern. I am pleased with the good, consistent performance. Others (George N, Jack C) have advised not to expect a boost in range performance, and that's probably good advice. AcuRite has not boosted its range claims. We all agree though that the clean omni pattern is a big plus.

Also, the BBU/data recovery feature works great. It got to really show itself through several power and web outages at my rural home.

Lastly, it looks like the days of 10M/half duplex Ethernet are behind us. Connecting at 100M/Full Duplex. Firmware updates have gone without a hitch.

George N. and I have been looking over the design. It appears Access has been given ample memory and compute resources to ensure a good, long design lifetime. Nice!

Thanks for the information John. That's good to hear. I'm rarely down for more than 3 - 6 hours so if the battery backup can last that long that would be nice. From my understanding it can hold 12 hours of data in case the internet connection is lost and can get MyAcurite caught up when it's restored? I know that won't help with WU though.

Looking forward to giving one a try since my current HUB is so sensitive to slight movements.

Yup, it will hold the data through an internet outage for 12 hours then when the web comes back it will patch the data hole in MyAcuRite. Magic! Twelve hours of data from multiple sensors requires a bunch of memory! I wish that WU could be patched too, but that would need support from their end. Maybe someday? The program flash memory in Access is way bigger than in the hub. It would seem that there's room for future enhancements.

One more thing. Judging from the parts we see it appears that Access keeps track of time internally. Hopefully that means no more (now infrequent) rain carryover or premature resets.

I think that if you try one of these, you will find Access has much to commend it. Switching from the hub was a breeze. I had no cloud data to protect during cut-over from the hub, though, and I don't know how it would have been handled. Maybe someone else can fill us in on that.

Hello Drew,

I can see gaps on both My AcuRite and Weather Underground between 12:55 and 2:00am on the 16th. It is hard to say as to what could have caused you to go offline. At this time since it is not a constant thing please keep an eye on it and let us know if it continues.

Thanks for the reply Jennifer. I think stations with only one or two signal bars can easily be interrupted by even minor interference. My station in Olympia which only has a one bar signal will not transmit during heavy rains which is unfortunate since it rains a lot here in the winter. At least the 5 in 1 keeps the rain total for the day so whenever it come back online at least I know the daily total.

Not sure how much the new hubs will help with the signal but the data back up is a plus. I got an email for a special price on the new hub. Will that price be available for all three of my hubs? Thanks for checking on that.
