outside temp stuck at -188

The outside temp is stuck on -188 degrees with an E next to it and 88% humidity.  The display also says "replace sensor batteries soon" in spite of my having replaced them numerous times doing the "hard boot" procedure I've noted in many problems.  I am currently using Energizer lithium batteries just to make sure although the outside temp rarely falls below zero degrees Celsius.  The sensor signal is strong.  I have brought the outside sensor inside for a week and re-performed hard boot.  Nothing changes.

I guess you are living at the coldest place in the world.  Take a picture and send it into the Weather Channel  :)  Sounds like you need a new sensor.

Zero Celsius is +32F ... freezing temperature.  I actually live in a very temperate part of western Canada ... rain forest land, not cold at all but I believe you may be right about the sensor.

Hello Larry,

Please try the steps below. You may have done some of the steps but there should be a couple of additional steps added in that should help you clear the -188 on the display. If this doesn't correct the issue and you have had the product more than 1 year we would recommend replacing the sensor.

You want the display and sensor to be at least 3 feet from electronics such as televisions, microwaves, computers & radios. Follow the battery guidelines below:

•Verify you are using fresh alkaline batteries or lithium batteries (when temperature is below -4oF/-20oC) in sensor.

•Quality brand batteries are recommended, including Duracell, Rayovac, Energizer, or Kirkland.

•Verify batteries are fresh. The battery expiration date should be at least 6 years out. Batteries can lose 3% power or more every year in storage.

•Heavy duty, extra strength or generic / store brand batteries are not recommended for use with AcuRite products because they may cause performance irregularities due to the way these types of batteries disperse power. Each battery should not exceed 1.6 volts.

•Rechargeable batteries are not recommended for use with AcuRite products because they may cause performance irregularities due to the voltage instability of these types of batteries.

•Mixing different battery types (brands, old/new, etc.) is not recommended.

Perform a hard reset:

1.Bring both the sensor and display unit indoors side by side.

2.Remove batteries from the sensor.

3.Remove batteries from the display unit and unplug the AC adapter (if applicable).

4.Wait 2 minutes to ensure any remaining battery power is discharged from both units.

5.Change the A-B-C Channel on both the display and sensor making sure they both match.

6.Reinstall batteries in outdoor sensor first.

7.Reinstall batteries in display unit second.

8.Let the units sit within a couple feet of each other for 30 minutes when comparing for accuracy
* The display should receive the signal within several minutes.

9.After a connection has been established you may place the sensor outdoors.
*If the signal connection fails after the units are separated try a new or different location for the display unit, the sensor or both.

I have performed these steps at least a dozen times and replaced all batteries with new as well as resetting the A-B-C switch(s) to all three settings to no avail.  I've even replaced the "button battery" on the back of the home station even though I suspect that battery is just for the backlight.  I still get the response noted in my initial comment (see attached photo).  I have even purchased a new sensor assembly which arrived today.  Still no help .... I'm suspecting something wrong with the home station receiver with regards to the sensor information only.  Are there any other reset options or have I got a broken unit?  The system is over 1 year old and I received as a gift so have no paperwork.
NOTE: When this started happening the outside information would intermittently flash up this screen but would then flash up the correct reading.  This went on for about a week prior to locking up permanently.

Hello Larry,

There are a couple of different versions of this specific weather station. The older version has a reset button in the battery compartment. It is right by where the compartment cover clips in. It is a small pinhole. You would need a paperclip or toothpick to get it in there.

This unit doesn't have a reset.  I see where you are talking about but this unit has a solid dimple where the hols would have been.
However, in a last ditch effort I put a small amount of pressure on the screen biasing it towards the back of the unit.  I have had success with previous types of displays using that technique.  It worked!  When I released the pressure the correct screen appeared!  At least for now.  That was about a half hour ago and it appears stable.  Time will tell.

Well, the celebration was a bit premature .... the "fix" only worked for about 24 hours then it reverted to the old problem and no further applications of "the fix" have been successful.  It looks like I'll have to purchase a new base unit.  Anybody have a need for spare sensors? :-)
