Hello JoAnn,
If you are referring to the AcuRite Access connection, you do need a router or switch of some sort to connect the Access to. The Access is not compatible with a hot spot at this time.

Your hotspot can only work if it happens to provide for a wired ethernet connection for your SmartHUB or Access.  Many of them do not have this.

If your hotspot device does offer wired ethernet connectivity, you then have to determine if you have an adequate and affordable data plan for your particular device.  SmartHUB and Access have different reporting rates that greatly impact how much data you will be consuming.
