1089M rain gauge winter and color

I have a newly acquired 1089M rain gauge and have two questions.  One is wondering if there is some alternative to bringing it inside in the winter.  Like a bag over the top?  The second is whether it would be OK to paint the outside black.  I have it mounted on top of a lawn light and it would be much less conspicuous if black like the light.

Hello Thomas,

You can paint the collector black. The rainfall collector cannot be used in the winter during freezing temperatures. Water expands when it freezes. If any water is left within the unit during a freeze, it can crack the plastic and permanently damage the unit. Thank you. Have a good day!

I understand the problem of water freezing, but was hoping for a cover or something that would keep me from having to take it in and out ... something about those little screws that I found very hard to work with.

A cover should be fine.  That's what some folks do in the winter to prevent snow melt from confusing their precipitation records.  (In the winter they measure snow and ice with a different method)

I don't suppose AcuRite makes a nice, little, injection molded cover that fits right over the top?

Hello Thomas,

We do not recommend keeping the collector outside for the winter months, if it were to crack this would void the warranty. We do not make any covers for the collector that would fit over the top for what you are looking for. Thank you. Have a good day!
