00986 not reading remotes any more

I own a Chaney 00986 remote thermometer system with a display unit and two remotes, one for the fridge and the other for the freezer, for at least the last couple of years or so.  The display unit is on the opposite side of the fridge door so it's not far from the remotes on the top shelves of the French door fridge/freezer unit and has been displaying the freezer and fridge temperatures more or less fine for the last few years with the occasional glitch which was easily fixed by pulling all their batteries, resetting the display unit and then reinserting the batteries in the sequence of display unit, then fridge remote and lastly freezer remote.  In the last 6 months, the display unit stopped picking up the readings from the two remotes altogether and just shows dashes instead of any numbers.  I have tried changing out all their batteries with fresh ones that were recently bought.  I have checked the new batteries with voltmeters and also a battery tester and all say the batteries are good.  I have tried removing all their new batteries and replacing them in the sequence of display unit, then the fridge remote and lastly the freezer remote while all three were right next to each other on my kitchen table.  Both remotes display their usual periodic red pulse on the LED but the display unit continues to show dashes instead of any readings at all like it used to.  I have also tried using a bent paper clip to reset the display unit until I hear the earsplitting shriek.  I have tried everything above that has been to recommended in the instruction manual and the FAQ on AcuRite's website to no avail.  Why has this system suddenly stopped working and how can I fix it?  I just want to know what the temperatures are inside my fridge and freezer without having to open their doors in the summer heat.  And I only have one 00986 kit running in my home as I only own one fridge and freezer as a single residential appliance.

Hello Tanster,

Thank you for preforming the recommended troubleshooting steps.  Please verify you are using the battery recommendations below. If you are, the unit will need to be replaced.  When was this thermometer purchased?

Batteries:

•Verify you are using fresh alkaline batteries or lithium batteries (when temperature is below -4oF/-20oC) in sensor.

•Quality brand batteries are recommended, including Duracell, Rayovac, Energizer, or Kirkland.

•Verify batteries are fresh. The battery expiration date should be at least 6 years out. Batteries can lose 3% power or more every year in storage.

•Heavy duty, extra strength or generic / store brand batteries are not recommended for use with AcuRite products because they may cause performance irregularities due to the way these types of batteries disperse power. Each battery should not exceed 1.6 volts.

•Rechargeable batteries are not recommended for use with AcuRite products because they may cause performance irregularities due to the voltage instability of these types of batteries.

•Mixing different battery types (brands, old/new, etc.) is not recommended.

Yes, I'm using fresh alkaline batteries and fresh lithium batteries in the display unit and sensors, respectively and they are all of the same brand (i.e., both AAA alkaline batteries in the display unit are Duracell while the four AA Lithium batteries in the two sensors are all Energizer; none are rechargeable).  I have tested the batteries with a battery tester as well as a multimeter to ensure they are fresh.  Unfortunately, this thermometer was purchased years ago, maybe even a decade back when you used the Chaney brand instead of the Acurite brand and your website didn't redirect from chaney.com to acurite.com.
