$40 Upcharge to Keep Functionality

AcuRite just confirmed in canned responses on their Facebook page: in order to keep the functionality that we have today, we have to pay $40 for new hardware.

They are trying to couch it in "you're recovering the cost of your previous hardware" but in the end, if you want to continue using the Bridge's services, it will cost you $40.  And you have a bricked, useless Internet bridge to discard.

Making the current product backwards-compatible should be a no-brainer and would ensure previous customers' loyalty has been honored. Acurite clearly is not concerned about customer loyalty.

What happens 2 years from now when the *next* HUB is introduced? Another $40-100 for those who just paid up in 2018?

I will never buy another Acurite product again. Buyer beware.

I agree. My situation is worse because I am in Canada. They want to charge $36 USD to ship to me. Add $40 to that, and you get $75 USD, which is $95 canadian dollars. I paid $80 for my acurite hub when I bought it from Amazon. I was a customer who was satisfied with the product and service. Now I am irate. In the short term, please flood acurite with bad reviews on amazon everybody. In the longer term, we need to get a class action lawsuit going.

Considering purchasing on Amazon.ca. One good review and one bad. Came here to see what is being said.. doesn't look promising. Though I do have a question.. What is the range max of the Hub to connected sensors?  Thanks Darren

Hello darrenpara,
The wireless signal range is 330ft from the HUB to sensors.  The AcuRite Access also has a 330ft signal however it has an improved antennae to allow for better reception.  Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you.

Let's try to migrate discussion to Reddit (linked above) for things that will inevitably be censored by Acurite here. They will not have the ability to remove or moderate discussion on Reddit. Their customer support in this thread has clearly been told just to keep pumping up the "Deal" of a $40 ransom upgrade and hope the noise fades.

On reddit we can continue discussing legal recourse, alternative products from other companies, and strategies in filing complaints with state attorney generals, BBB, Amazon, etc.

Quickly bookmark this link now since I expect it to be taken down soon.

The whole thing is pure pi** poor treatment of existing customers and poor business practice when there are many other options in the marketplace. Im a customer service analyst and can tell you this is not very bright for a vendor to think they will not lose clients from this exercise.

Here is the way I see this.
I have had a year and a half service with my smarthub and will have two years before disconnection.
I have had no errors in all that time.
My new Access is working great a lot better than the Smarthub with signal detection.
So well it picks up a sensor somewhere in a neighbors house. Working for more than a month no errors. Yes it is a $40 upgrade.
But what you fail to consider is that you are getting for FREE. A FREE app to see your weather at your house on your iPhone Anywhere. What a great tech advancement. The main thing that they supply for FREE is the processing power to access all these weather stations all over the country by the thousands. That cost lots of money. Also FREE access to Weather Underground so you and your neighbors can see the weather in your area and be able to forecast weather conditions in your area.
This stuff cost gobs of money. No I do not work for Acurite but am retired from development in a large computer company that does this stuff that currently owns and runs Weather Underground.
Believe me from my computer development experience. This is neat stuff. The HUB has no buffering
thus has to be read more frequently than an Access thus saving processing power allowing support for more users etc. saving dollars.
I would count ourselves lucky at such a cheap solution that does so much. They could charge you  service fees for these type of solutions that would be a lot more than $40. I am Happy Here.

I agree for someone like yourself, recent purchase, you should be able to get a refund or free upgrade.

They shouldn't need to terminate the hub service so suddenly. The hub and the access are currently working at the same time. The hub is still being sold on amazon right now! They should have alerted amazon to pull all of the hubs, at least in time to coincide with this announcement. People are still buying them! If they are discontinuing the hub today, they should honor the service fr 2 years, not 6 months.

That is a looooong justification for a bad customer experience, Doug. All they have to do is not brick our current devices.

It’s an awful thing for Cheney/Acurite to do. Period.

If my system was a few years old I'd agree that a $40 upgrade offer is reasonable.  But for a recent purchase that's still under warranty, the upgrade should be free.

Go to bbb.org and ask for a buyback.

Or if your purchase was within a few months see if you can still do a credit card chargeback for fraudulent business practices.

Doug, I don't see a forced upgrade as "lucky". If Acurite had been transparent with their planned obsolescence schedule and customers knew what they were buying was going to stop working in August, that would be different. But Acurite was not transparent - they dictated with little notice. If you want to do business with that kind of company, more power to you. Judging from the ratio of bad-to-good comments on this news, I'd say most SmartHUB customers are not feeling lucky.

Thank god I bought it on Amazon, Amazon is taking it back with a full refund. GOOD BY Acurite HELLO Lacrosse.

I JUST got mine working about a week ago, after purchasing it in December.  First two were defective, (say anything about the QUALITY?), and it took this long to get one to  work!  I cant believe they have done this and think they will get away with it.  I could not afford to get it right away due to income level, and saved for it for several months, now they tell me my purchase is WORTHLESS?  PLEASE, some lawyer see these complaints and sock them with a HUGE class action lawsuit for fraud! I am TOTALLY disgusted, and will tell everyone I know about this company, and how they rip off the customer.  I cant afford a NEW piece of equipment even WITH the "discount". When I can afford it, I will be shopping at a different company!

If it is within 90 days from when you bought it, you can still return it for a refund.
