model #01035 Acurite Weather Service installation problem on WinXP PC - service won't stay running

PC Connect install appear successful but when trying to run Acurite Weather Service app, I get the error from User Management Console "Please start the Acurite Weather Service first". I try to start the service manually but no go "The Acurite Weather Center Service service on local computer started and then stopped". Windows Event Viewers indicates Type: Error; Event ID: 0; "Failed to process service command SystemNullReferenceException. Object reference not set to an instance of an object at WebPortalInterface.webPortalReporter.Register() at Acurite.AcuriteWeatherService.OnCustomCommand(Int32 command) at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.DeferredCustomCommand(Int32 command)"
Computer is WinXP fully updated and patched; .net running up to date;
My first install on the PC was successful .. I even streamed a few hours to Weather Underground but after a reboot, I get these errors. Have also restored OS to pre-first install of this app .. same error.

I will return the product if I can't resolve this soon. Please help!

    • There is soo much variation from local site to local site, hell maybe the 5-1 is right and all the others are wrong
    • FWIW, if you apply an offset from the raw pressure of the console, it gives a very accurate true altimeter to MSLP. This is based on results from the third party software. That said, if we get the ability to control this ourselves in MBW, from Jeff's reply, then we are in good shape with regard to MBW which gets uploaded to WxUnderground. So, that is good news when it comes (for all sensors).

    Ken,

Yes. I think they even have a beta version that will now upload to MBW (from latest release info on their site). I think it is worth a test drive. However, it does cost like $70 bucks to keep, however it may be worth it if AcuRite cannot get their software/portal to work with reliable data?!? Plus it has a lot of graphic/weather record features!

    • Jeff sent Brian a station so he could implement support for the acurite stations in WD, so he does have one to work with and use for bug fixing and regression testing.
    • Interesting....AcuRite could always license WD for distro with their products. :-)

Acurite you've been promising a fix on this issue for months. What is happening????
    • for the xp home-pro and media service stop, there is a solution.. the problem is in the log size restrictions, because your unit takes readings every 18 seconds for the sensors and every 12 minutes for BAR measurements, the service logs default max becomes full rather quickly. After 7 days, by default windows will then over write the files, but quite often, any change to windows actions, such as changing the action to "overwrite when necessary", won't get the desired result, without being accompanied by either emptying the log or change the log file size (from 512k to7040k) ... your service should stay running when started now, but i find a reboot at this time gets windows on the straight and narrow.

      hope this helps

I have installed the Weather Dispay (WD) program, and had no problem with the 1035 to PC connection. This $70 program has many many more features than the still NOT working piece of junk offered by Acurite or is it Acuwrong!
    Please check it out.

Anyone following this thread running the laest Weather Display build 08 that added the "featrue" to feed the Acurite My Backyard Weather web application directly? Others on the WD forum report successfully doing that, but mine does not update the MBY site. From the WD software, I am successful in "Registering" my mach address and blowing out my previous data, but it never updates from WD. WireShark traffic monitor shows the software is communicaing with Acurite, but results shown on MBY. I wonder what the secret is?

I am running the latest version and it has been updating MBW without any issues (besides the bad high and low data which seems to be related to MBW). It has been updating just fine and was no trouble to setup. Just had to put the right mac address in and then setup up my bridge again on MBW.

Gene one other thing to check is to make sure that the acurite service is not running as it would confuse the MBW server if you were sending two different sets of data, one from the service and one from WD.

Please elaborate on "Just had to put the right mac address in and then setup up my bridge again on MBW. " Please understand that I have the correct mac address. So moving on, how did you set up the bridge again? Did you stop all acurite programs and the acurite service, then from the WD set up screen, set the address and click register my station? Or was there a different order of going about it? Then did you go to the MBY site and set up the new bridge, same data as you entered before for the first Acurite software set up? Then did it immediately give you the option to add sensors, including the 5n1 and pressure bridge? When I do as described, I never get to see and add the 5n1, only the pressure bridge. And as said repeadly, never any data updates.

Hey Gene - I typed my Mac addy into WD, hit the register button in WD (I had stopped using the acurite service and MBW a couple of weeks earlier when I switched to WD before it supported MBW).

Next I went to MBW and ran thru the setup routine there.

I was thinking about why it works for you when you hit the test data send button but then stopped - I wonder if you have to have the main internet switch turned on in WD to get it to auto send - you can find it if you open the WD control panel, then choose the FTP/Connections icon, then on the connections tab you will find the main internet switch, if it is off try turning it on.

I operate my own website and so ftp data from WD to my hosting company's web server so I already had the main internet switch turned on.

Steve, thanks for the reply. I keep thinking it must be some ,obsecure to me, setting like that. I do have the Main internet switch on and still no data other then when I hit Test. I have tried about every possible way to set this up, each time taking down the original MBY setting and stil no data or 5n1 stuff showing up on MBY from WD. I even set up an new set up on anther PC running Windows 7, and registered as a new user on MBY with a diferent e-mail account, and still the same results. I have also turned off my hardware firewall, and each PC firewall to see if that has anything to do with it, and still no success.

Several people reporting this as working fine for them are also posting to weather underground. I'm wondering if somehow that is a key to success on the MBY site. It seems that you are not doing that, but are doing some other internet sending. Maybe there is an "un-documented featrue" from some of those other applications, that make this work with MBY. Still guessing

Gene I have been using WD to send data to Weather Underground and to NOAA via the APRXWXNET and MADIS for 8 years now and never had to fool around with anything. Setting up my own website was a bit more complicated but there wasn't anything really tricky with it.

MBW just worked without any tinkering once I enabled it in WD.

The thing that is really mystifying is that it works when you press the test data send button. To me that says that your system is properly configured to allow the data to pass through to the site. Why it won't work automatically is the real mystery.

The only thing I can suggest at this point is that you continue working with Brian over on his forum.

I think it's the Log file that is being filled up that stops the service running. Empty the Application and System log files in Event viewer, re boot and see what happens. It worked for me. If this works for you, consider making the log files bigger, overwriting them sooner or doing a manual clear every day or so.

If this is truly what is causing this problem for so many people, surely a quick software update could help.

  • yes you are correct, ...its the action which needs to changed, i'm not sure if that can be adressed during the install of the weatherservice ... some folks have mentioned they ended up with a corupt log file, hey its windows, some folks claim windows comes with corupt files ... i'm hoping they will post the latest USBpcconnectinstall.msi file soon... at least get the connectivity issues put to bed!

    Whats wrong...you ask?

Internet latency (packet delays) wireless internet is the worst. The main ISP Wholesalers sell off there underused bandwidth but put the sub-ips through hell. Check your system for speed,,,and look at all the hops the packets must climb through note Too Many make for irratic IT.

    Operating Systems, XP,Vista32, Vista 64,Win 7
(.net frameworks (all versions work together not independently)

Variations in the callibration of the station sensors.

    Packetization by the Console

Beta drivers, varieties being tested by each of us.

Software and testing of code installed at the Server End.

Misunderstanding by the user of USB 1,2,3,4 and the resetting mid sequence by the user causing the hang ups.

Acculink synchroniztion with the Wunderground servers.

Wunderground servers needs to be reset constantly after acculink loses handshake.
14 day learning mode must be adhered to regardless of spikes.

There isn't anything mysterious out there just human error,,remember that old phrase, GIGO....!

Right now my Station is reporting with acceptable variations as it nears the end of the last 14 day learning cycle I began with the last beta update. I have some minor issues with reporting but on the whole I'm satisfied. Another learning curve is definitely out of the picture although if Accurite collaborates with that company it would be a win win for all of us.

    happy I’m thankful
Gene has the WeatherDisplay brand software updating to MBY now, after installing WD version build 09. When I first installed version 9 I had entered the station MACH address in lower case. WD sends what exactly what you type in the id box, and MBY requires Upper case to recognize the station address. WD continues to update correctly to Weather Underground. MBY is showing rainfal rates and amounts off by wild numbers, more than a factor of 10, with rain rate not agreeing with rain amounts. So far, MBY is chowing the correct temperature and humidity. Correct being what I have in the WD screen display.
